6 Reasons to Visit Egypt This Year

Writer: Kaitlin Siena MurrayKaitlin Siena Murray

For many of us who grew up watching Indiana Jones or reading mystical tales of the ancient Pharaohs, Egypt has been a place that has lived at the top of our bucket lists. Whether we dreamt of seeing the Pyramids of Giza rise high into the sky or sail down the Nile, this country has captured the imagination of many around the globe. With tourism on the rise and new museums showcasing the nation's past, now is the perfect time to pack your bags and embark on an unforgettable journey through one of the most captivating countries in the world.

After six visits to Egypt, I still find myself drawn back to its endless archaeological wonders, rich cultural experiences, and the warm embrace of its people. No matter how often I stroll through its ancient sites, I am still captivated by how many layers of stories, myths, and secrets lie underneath the ground, waiting to be discovered. Indeed, each time I return, the depth of Egyptian culture leaves a lasting impression, proving true the words of Pope Shenouda of Alexandria: "Egypt is not a country we live in, but a country that lives within us."

So, here are six reasons why Egypt should be your next adventure this year:

1. The Vibrancy of Egyptian Culture

Egypt pulses with life, history, and ancient tradition. Whether you're wandering through bustling souks or sailing down the Nile, you’ll find the country’s cultural vibrancy both exhilarating and enriching. There's a sense of mystery woven into the very fabric of daily life, from the ancient temples to the modern streets of Cairo. If you're seeking an adventure that stirs your spirit and awakens your curiosity, Egypt will not disappoint.

2. Archaeological Marvels Beyond Compare

Home to some of the most iconic ancient sites in the world, Egypt is a living museum. The Pyramids of Giza, the Valley of the Kings, and countless other archaeological treasures continue to awe visitors. No matter how many times you've seen them in photos or films, standing before these magnificent structures is an experience that will leave you breathless. Being in the presence of such a monumental history is like stepping back in time. My first view of the Nile, or gazing into the golden mask of King Tutankhamun, remains etched in my memory.

3. The Kindness and Warmth of the People

One of the most enriching aspects of traveling in Egypt is connecting with its people. Egyptians are known for their generosity, humor, and hospitality. Whether you’re sharing a cup of tea in a local café or bargaining at a market, you’ll be met with smiles and genuine warmth. In a country where hospitality is an art form, you’ll quickly feel at home. Egypt also shatters common misconceptions about the Middle East—what you'll find here are welcoming hearts and shared humanity. You’ll leave not only with memories of pyramids and temples but with friendships that last.

4. A Journey Along the Nile

A Nile River cruise offers an intimate glimpse into daily Egyptian life. As you glide along the water, you'll pass farmers working the land, children splashing in the shallows, and donkeys pulling carts laden with goods. This is Egypt at its most timeless.

Each morning, you'll dock near ancient temples like Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae, where you can walk in the footsteps of pharaohs. Onboard, you can enjoy the luxury of an all-inclusive experience, while marveling at how life along the river has remained largely unchanged for millennia. As I once wrote, “For thousands of years, this river has been the heartbeat of Egypt, its waters reflecting both the heavens and the stories of civilizations long past.”

5. A Challenge Worth Taking

Traveling in Egypt can sometimes push you out of your comfort zone, but that's where the magic happens. From haggling in the markets to navigating new customs, Egypt challenges you to grow and adapt. These moments of discomfort are where true adventure lies, as you learn to be assertive, resourceful, and resilient. When you embrace the unknown, Egypt rewards you with unforgettable experiences and personal growth.

6. Stunning Beaches and World-Class Diving

If you’re dreaming of crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and a tropical escape at an affordable price, Egypt's Red Sea coastline has it all. Whether you’re diving in Sharm el-Sheikh, snorkeling in Hurghada, or soaking up the sun in Marsa Alam, the Red Sea offers some of the best diving spots in the world. It's the perfect blend of beachside relaxation and proximity to the awe-inspiring wonders of ancient Egypt.
